An Impressive Springbok Journey
Cornal Hendricks represented South Africa in 12 Test matches between 2014 and 2015, scoring five tries and achieving a 63.64% win rate with the Springboks. He made his international debut during the 2014 mid-year Test series and quickly proved his talent with crucial tries against teams such as Wales, Argentina, Australia, and New Zealand.
In addition to 15-man rugby, Hendricks was a standout player for South Africa’s Sevens team (the Blitzboks) from 2011 to 2014. He was named Springbok Sevens Player of the Year in 2013 and won a gold medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. His contributions to the Blitzboks solidified Hendricks’ reputation as one of the most complete and talented players of his generation.
Health Setback and Triumphant Return
In 2016, Hendricks’ rising career was abruptly halted when he was diagnosed with a serious heart condition. The diagnosis came shortly after he had signed a two-year contract with Western Province and the Stormers, forcing him out of action and confronting the possibility of a life-threatening situation if he continued to play.
Hendricks described it as the darkest period of his life:
"It felt like everything collapsed when the doctors told me I couldn't play rugby anymore. But my family and faith helped me through."
In 2019, after consulting cardiologist Dr. Wouter Basson, Hendricks was cleared to return to the field. He signed with the Bulls and underwent a series of rigorous medical tests to ensure his fitness. His return was not only a personal victory but also a powerful source of inspiration for others facing adversity.
Peak Years with the Bulls
Over five years with the Bulls, Hendricks became a key player, making 115 appearances and scoring 34 tries. He played a significant role in the team’s successful 2020/21 Currie Cup campaign, notably serving as captain and earning the Player of the Year award.
One of his most memorable matches was the 2021 Currie Cup final against the Sharks, where Hendricks delivered an outstanding performance, helping the Bulls secure a hard-fought victory after 100 minutes of play.
Off-Field Impact and Lasting Legacy
Beyond his on-field achievements, Cornal Hendricks made a lasting impact through his community work. He founded the Cornal Hendricks Foundation to support underprivileged youth and organized rugby workshops promoting values like discipline, teamwork, and resilience.
Hendricks’ sudden passing in May 2025 is a major blow to the South African rugby community and fans around the globe. However, his legacy—from unforgettable moments on the field to meaningful contributions off it—will continue to inspire all who witnessed the extraordinary journey of a rugby star marked by courage, perseverance, and compassion.
