"Trump 2028" Sparks Controversy: Third Term Ambitions Raise Constitutional Questions
On Thursday, Donald Trump's online store launched a new merchandise line featuring red hats and T-shirts with the slogan “Trump 2028”, igniting public speculation about whether the former President is seeking an unprecedented third term in the White House—despite the U.S. Constitution explicitly prohibiting it.
The collection, described as “a beautiful set” by White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, includes a red hat priced at $50 and a T-shirt bearing the slogan “Trump 2028” along with “Rewrite The Rules” for $36. Trump Organization declined to comment when contacted by CNBC.
Trump Drops Hints About a Possible Third Term
While the 22nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution clearly states that “No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice,” Trump—who was elected in 2016 and again in 2024—has repeatedly teased the idea of running again in 2028.
Speaking to the press, Trump said: “A lot of people want me to do it… But we’ve got a long way to go. You know, it’s still early in the administration.”
When NBC asked whether he would consider a third term, he replied: “I like working”. “I’m not joking,” Trump added. “But I’m not joking — it’s still too early to think about that.”
He also alluded to possible legal maneuvers: “There are ways you can do it,” he said cryptically.
“Trump 2028” – Joke or a Real Plan?
At the National Rifle Association (NRA) event in May 2024, Trump asked: “Will it be considered three terms or two terms if we win again?”
According to insiders, after defeating Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 election, Trump told Republican colleagues: “I don’t plan to run again — unless you all say, ‘He’s so good, we have to find a way.’”
On April 11, former White House advisor Steve Bannon made a bold claim during a broadcast: “President Trump will run for a third term and he will be elected again”. “He will become President of the United States on the afternoon of January 20, 2029.”
Bannon also revealed: “We have a team working on making that possible.”
Constitutional Amendment Proposal: A Legal Path Forward?
In January 2025, Rep. Andy Ogles (R-TN) introduced a resolution to amend the Constitution to allow future presidents, including Trump, to serve a third term.
Controversially, the proposed amendment does not apply to the three living former two-term presidents—Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, and Barack Obama—while opening the door for Trump specifically.
The amendment reads: “No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than three times, nor shall any person be elected to any additional term after having been elected to two consecutive terms.”
